Whether you are swimming in your private pool, participating in an aerobics class at a local gym, or dip diving in a lake, the swimming exercises can help you a lot. However, swimming also has a fair share of disadvantages.

Knowing the downside of swimming keeps you aware and help you practice swimming wiser. Here are the top disadvantages of swimming:

1) Over swimming: Risk of specific injuries

One of the critical disadvantages of swimming is, it increases the risks of specific injuries. Yes, you might say swimming eliminates some risk of muscle and joint injuries, but the exercise can cause detrimental to the joints and tendons if done repetitively. As a result, swimming does increase the tendinitis risks that tend to occur when you do extreme exercising than recommended. It affects the joints, and it is quite painful.

2) Fungal infections

Mycosis, an infection caused by a fungus, is another downside of swimming. It’s mostly familiar to those swimmers who use the public shower at the gym after workouts. The foot fungus is the most common mycosis type and appears when your toes don’t dry thoroughly.

3) Chlorine: Irritation and allergies

A lot of Chlorine is known to irritate the soft mucous membranes, especially the eyes and nose, and they can also cause allergies. You can avoid eye irritation by wearing high-quality swim goggles.

It’s also a toxin that can cause asthma and respiratory illness. Some competitive swimmer was reported to have contracted swimmer’s asthma or asthma-like symptoms, which are linked to repeated swimming.

Our bodies absorb Chlorine both through the lungs as we breathe and skin. Any unventilated indoor pool or an outdoor pool with stagnant air have unsafe levels of Chlorine in the air.

4) Extra equipment needed

For you to practice swimming, you need a good swimming pool. But you also need some other essentials, equipment, and accessories. For instance, you need an active swimsuit, swim goggles, and a cap for your head. On top of this, if you do not own a pool, you will then need to look for a pool to go and practice in, and probably pay a subscription fee.

5) Ocean Dangers

People prefer natural ocean swimming as one of the best ways to swim for exercise since no distance limitation. However, ocean possesses some dangers. Crabs, sharks, crocodiles, and alligators occasionally attack and harm swimmers in the sea.

Also, there is the danger of riptides and strong currents which can sweep the swimmers away from the shore. Massive wave can even knock you down and hit you directly to the sharp rocks and shells underfoot on the beach. You might also injure yourself when you dive into shallow water.

6) Drowning

Someone who has ever drowned never forgets the experience; the dangers of drowning while swimming is real, especially to kids. You need to keep a close eye on the children while near the pool always. Also having a fence and pool alarm is excellent for their safety. Even if the kid is using a floating device, do keep an eye on him.

7) Quitting in winter

Summer swimming is quite an enjoyable activity since the cold water cools the body down, allowing you to relax and enjoy without going on vocation. However, with winter arrival, likely, you won’t swim. I don’t think you will love the feeling you get when you change the clothes, shower, and get out of the water with wet hair, think of swimsuit when it is cold outside. These are enough motivation to push to quit swimming during winter.

Also, cold swimming is related to the flu. But what happens if you do not wear adequate warm clothing after leaving the pool. It can even occur if you spend much time wearing wet clothes. And for you to give yourself to have great swimming time during winter is having an indoor heated swimming pool which requires a lot of inputs and expenses.
